TR-69
Standard Brief
Technical Report – 069 (TR-069) specifications approved and published by DSL Forum is a bidirectional CPE WAN Management Protocol that provides the communication between xDSL CPE and Auto Configuration Servers (ACS). Its main purposes are to provide remotely configuration and provisioning of CPE devices within an integrated ADSL network. This allows service providers to increase the ability to offer varieties of service bundles and reduce the cost of technical support and maintenance for their broadband business.
TR-069 protocol stack is based on SOAP/HTTP similar to those used by LAN side protocol. The major differences are addition of RFC2965 (HTTP state management via cookies), different application layer, including support for multiple envelopes within single SOAP messages.

Here is an outline of functions supported by TR-069 CPE WAN Management:
1. Auto-configuration and dynamic service provisioning
–Initial CPE configuration
–Re-provisioning at any subsequent time
–Allow vendor-specific parameter configuration
2. Software/firmware image management
–Version identification
–File download initiation
–Notification of file downloaded
3. Status and performance monitoring
4. Log file analysis and dynamic notification
5. Diagnostics
–Connectivity and service issues

TR-069 in an ADSL Architecture
As service providers see multiple broadband and networking technologies are converging in the next generation digital home, management of such convergence is complex, further driving the need for simplification of end device provisioning and maintenance. TR-069 protocol forms a seamless communication bridge between CPE device and ACS (Auto Configuration Server). It is the key to the solution for service providers to offer multiple services easily and at lower cost.
Here are the key benefits that service providers will receive:
- Reduced technical support costs.
- Provide remotely troubleshoot capability.
- Ability to maintain and monitor remote CPE units 24/7.
- Ability to update/modify software and service remotely.
